Release Notes

HVBackup 1.0.1

Easy to use and powerful command line tool to perform Hyper-V virtual machine backups, in standalone and cluster (CSV) environments. Supports app consistent backups based on the Hyper V VSS provider integrated in the OS.

Works on Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2012 R2
Core and Hyper-V editions are fully supported!

Usage sample:

HVBackup -a -o c:\backup

The above command will backup all the virtual machines found on the host, creating a separate zip file for each one in the "c:\backup" folder. Note: the specified folder can be also on a remote server (e.g. \\yourserver\backup\path)

Reviews for this release

Great script. Long was looking for something like this.

This tool looks great, thanks for sharing. I love that it's open-source. I'd also encourage you to try Hyperoo - It's fast, secure and totally stable. Also supports cluster shared volumes and it'll work locally or over the network. A couple more things that set it apart from this solution is the simple graphical interface, powerful scheduling and Change-Tracking / Live backup options. They really slash backup times in our experience. It's completely Free to use - you only pay if you want to use their Private Cloud backup option, or a few advanced features. Plus those options have a free 30-day trial. So give it a whirl - costs nothing to try. It gets great reviews! Hope that helps, Gavin

Seems to do not backup all needed files of a saved state backed up VM. E.g. XP, Ubuntu 12.04., Debian etc. Restore/Import will fail. At least under special circumstances, possibly always. Not yet officially confirmed from developer. Otherwise a very reliable and robust application.

Been running the beta release on 95% of company production servers for close to six months without any major headaches. Running Hyper-V 2012 hosts on HP ProLiant DL380 G5 with Windows7 and WindowsServer 2003R2 x32 & x64 bits guest running Exchange 2007, AD, DHCP, DNS, File/Print sharing and Sharepoint. More recently upgraded all servers onto stable release version 1.0.1. We are now successfully backing up a large fixed 360GB VHDX running Exchange without issue. Yet to try using HVBackup to do an online backup of our large 700+GB SQL server (last time it ran for days and crashed the app) but will give it another go soon and report back .. This is one of the greatest free open source products I've come across in 20 years...(right up there with Gallery Server Pro) please keep on developing this terrific tool guys !
